Introduction

English Department started functioning in the year 1998. It was a rather humble beginning but at present its a full-fledged large department. In addition to the basic Post Graduate degree one teacher has M. Phil Degree. All the members of the faculty have been continually updating their knowledge by attending various International, National, State level Seminars and Workshops. Mr. Machhendra Belki, Associate Prof and Head of the Dept. has published articles in books and International journals with ISBN and ISSN certification.

Initially the faculty taught only basic or compulsory English language. Then in 2004, Mangalore University affiliation was obtained for offering English literature as a part of the curriculum. The strength of students for English literature has steadily grown from 5 during 2004-05 to 35 in the present academic year. Some students who originate from Sri Lanka, Meghalaya and Bhutan have also been a part of the department. The students have done the department proud by achieving above 96% results consistently for the last 8 years.

Coaching classes in English were conducted for slow learners and for students appearing in supplementary exams and for average and advanced learners too. The faculty has helped to train students to compere for the various programmes and events of the college such as the Talents Day, Sports Day, College Day and mega-cultural and literary events such as Alva’s Virasat and Nudisiri. The faculty has also played an integral role in being Media committee members during Nudisiri, Virasat and Alva’s Pragati. All faculty members are in College Magazine Committee and help for proof reading and for draft Articles, Publications for the college Magazine and the newsletters of the college.

Language Lab has recently been set up which will be made use of by the Department to train students in English. All the faculty members are duly trained for the lab. We propose to keep the Language Lab open for the use of public.

Besides Spoken English Practice certificate course, ‘Business English Certification’ (BEC) course was also offered by the department from 2016 to 2021. It is an authorized examination of Cambridge University, UK. The college is study and examination center. At present it offers Corporate English Practice certificate course to the students.
