Students will gain an understanding the principles of spectroscopy and able to solve structural problems, particularly Organic Molecules. Hence it will enhance their knowledge in Organic Spectroscopy.
OCH503: Students will study about introduction and concepts of heterocyclic chemistry, important heterocyclic molecules, synthesis and reactions of those molecules which are used as drugs.
OCS504: Students acquire the concepts of Photochemistry, orbital theories. Introduction, classification of Pericyclic reactions, electrocyclic, cycloaddition and sigmatropic reactions. The course aims to provide a sound understanding of the fundamentals of the chemistry of carbohydrates, Peptides & Proteins, Nucleic acids, Non steroidal hormones, Vitamins and antibiotics.
OCS505 & OCE506: Non-Chemistry students will learn the spectroscopic techniques viz. UV, IR, NMS and Mass Spectrometry, understand the basics of environmental concepts, water pollution prevention and control methods, Introduction, theoretical concepts and instrumentation in the Green Chemistry.
OCP507: This practical paper deals with quantitative determination of compounds of different functional groups. Students will get the knowledge of volumetric titration and to estimate the amount of compound present in the solution.
OCP508: Students concentrate on the Isolation and Characterization of natural products, Determination and purification techniques viz. TLC, Paper and column.
OCP509: In the practical paper students will study about separation and qualitative analysis of mixture of three individual compounds. They also will do the preparation of suitable derivative for each component, identification of derivative by M.P, TLC and spectral techniques.
OCH551: The student shall gain a sound understanding of the basics of organic synthesis, methodology development and multi-step synthesis. After the completion of the course, the students would learn the application of retrosythetic analysis in organic synhtesis. The special emphasis on bio-active natural products synthesis gives them an idea of planning, design, understanding the mechanistic impliations and execution of synthetic organic chemistry which is pivotal in organic chemistry. After the completion of the course the students would able to theoretically devises strategies for the synthesis of simple to complex organic molecules synthesis.
OCH552: The students would learn about the importance of theories related to drug designing and molecular modeling, drug-receptor interactions etc. This is intended to help the students to understand the three dimensionality of organic and biomolecules and their significance. They would also learn medicinally important class of drugs.
OCH553: Students acquire knowledge of synthesis and structural elucidation of some important alkaloids, terpeniods, and steroids & hormones. Students will learn the regulations of human physiological functions and its importance. They also study structural elucidation of important molecules.
OCS554: Students gain skills in the Synthetic polymers with Classification and Nomenclature. Methods of polymerization, Mechanism and Stereochemistry. They acquire basic knowledge of Dyes with Introduction, modern theories of colour and chemical constitution. Classification of dyes, methods of applying dyes. Also exposed the theories and concepts of insecticides, fungicides and herbicides.
OCS555: The student shall gain skill of separation and purification techniques the most important chromatographic technique, which is an essential tool in quality control process in the pharmaceutical industries. Students are exposed to polymer supported reagents in organic synthesis and multicomponent reactions with few named reactions involved in it. And reaction strategies like asymmetric synthesis which is relevant to industrial applications. Petrochemicals and manufacture of different petrochemical products and their applications, different stages involved in petrochemical synthesis.
OCS556 & OCH557: Students perform multi step organic synthesis. Preparation of bioactive molecules in the practical leads to the development of knowledge and attain skills in the Synthetic organic chemistry.
OCH558: Students get practical knowledge in separation of components from mixture of organic compounds by fractional crystallization, fractional distillation, adsorption, Paper, TLC and column chromatography. The purification and characterization of organic compounds. Acquire strong spectroscopic skills by elucidation of structure of organic compounds using UV, IR, NMR and Mass spectra.
OCH559: Student will spend 6-8 weeks undertaking a project which uses and enhances many of the skills learnt on the course. The majority of students will undertake their project at the Industries, but the opportunity will exist for students to do their project at other relevant institutions. Following the conclusion of the work, they will complete a report on the project as well as give a presentation of their finding and defend their work during the viva examination.
