PG department of biotechnology, Alva’s College, Moodbidri, was established in the year 2009 with an objective to impart knowledge in theoretical and practical aspects of Biotechnology. In addition to teaching, the department is also conducting research in the areas of Bioprospecting, Nanotechnology, Plant tissue culture and Microbial biotechnology. The Department consists of 4 experienced faculties with Ph. D. degree and among them Dr. Rama Bhat and Dr Jayadev K. are recognized Ph. D. guides of Mangalore University. Dr. Rama Bhat is also a recognized guide of Tumkur University, Tumkur and Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The following were the funds received from the external funding agencies.
Objectives:
- To provide better opportunity to every one for performing their capacity in knowledge and innovative research to compete with the global.
- To bring advanced knowledge among youth generations and skills of research oriented work based on theoretical knowledge.
- To motivate students on handling basic research work along with academic curricula.

Duration: Two years (Full Time)
Eligibility:
Candidates who have passed the three/four years bachelor degree examination of Mangalore University or any other University considered as equivalent thereto with Life Science subjects provided they have studied Chemistry/Biochemistry as one of the major/optional/subsidiary subject and have secured a minimum of 45% marks (40% in case of SC/ST/Category-1 candidates) in aggregate excluding languages and group III subjects are eligible for the programme.
Laboratory facilities:
The department has sophisticated laboratories in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Plant and Animal Tissue Culture. Some of the infrastructure available in the department include Laminar Air Flow Cabinets, Autoclaves, Hot air oven, Incubators, Cooling Centrifuge, Orbital shaker, inverted microscope, Compound Microscope fitted with image capturing unit, UV- visible Spectrophotometer, Carbon dioxide incubator for Animal Cell/tissue culture, PCR machine, ELISA reader, Tissue homogenizer, Muffle furnace and BOD.
The department also utilizes common facilities of animal house with Alva’s Ayurveda Medical College.
