Cultural Nuances in the Translation Studies Workshop
Moodubidire: In celebration of International Translation Day, the Department of Postgraduate Studies in English at Alva’s College, Moodubidire, hosted a workshop on Translation Studies on September 30. The event featured Dr. N.S. Govinda, a retired professor of English and renowned translator for the Lok Sabha proceedings in New Delhi, as the keynote speaker.
Dr. Govinda enlightened the students about the growing opportunities in the field of translation, encouraging them to consider it as a viable career. He emphasized the importance of continuous learning in the profession, stating, “It is of utmost importance that we, as translators, know that we don’t have all the knowledge. We must be open to learn.” He also underlined the role of translation in preserving cultural context, adding, “We don’t only translate language, but culture too.”
During the interactive session, students were tasked with translating scripts in Hindi, Kannada, Tulu, Malayalam, and Manipuri into English. This hands-on exercise offered participants a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in translation.
After students shared the challenges they encountered while translating, Dr. Govinda provided practical tips on overcoming these issues. He offered guidance on how to approach difficult words, maintain the essence of the original language, and navigate cultural nuances effectively.
The workshop concluded with an award ceremony for the winners of Lècriture, a translation competition held earlier across the Alva’s Education Foundation. The first prize was awarded to Sowmya Shenoy B from II B.Ed, Alva’s College of Education, while Hiba Fathima from II M.Com (General), Alva’s College (Autonomous), secured the second place.
The workshop was presided over by Dr. Kurian, Principal of Alva’s College, who highlighted the importance of preserving local languages and promoting linguistic diversity. Dr. T.K. Ravindran, Chairperson of the Department of PG Studies in English, Mrs. Sandhya K.S., Dean of Humanities, and Mrs. Juliana Rodriguez, Coordinator of the Department of PG Studies in English, were also present at the event.
Students from various departments, including PG Studies in Psychology, II-year M.Com (General), Bachelor in Education, and undergraduates with an interest in translation, participated in the workshop. Angel Shaina formally welcomed the gathering, while Lavita Rego delivered the vote of thanks. The event was hosted by Pavithra Tej.
The workshop provided a valuable learning experience, blending both theoretical knowledge and practical insights into the intricate art of translation.
