The field of Mass Communication and Journalism has grown leaps and bounds in the twenty first century. Media with its enlarged foot print on the earth has attracted the attention of one and all, be it the common man or the academics. This phenomenon has brought in rapid growth in the educational institutions offering courses in Journalism. Today media stands-out as one of the largest employer in the world. The development of mass media has brought in sea-changes with respect to flow of information around the world, specially the new-media technology and social networking.

The Department of Post Graduate Studies in Mass Communication and Journalism started in the year of 2014 and is giving wide exposure to the students in the field of higher education and introducing them to the practical world of media and communication.

The department is fully equipped with a multi-media studio, computer lab and an audio-visual room to support the academic program. One of the unique of the department is a collection of about 2500 old newspapers as a part of the research program.

Alva’s Multimedia and E-content Development Centre, a well equipped audio-visual production studio, is serving as a platform for number of students to learn and exhibit their talents. The Centre has broadcast quality cameras, light unit with green screen facility. It also has apparatus for still photography with hi-end cameras and studio lightings and the computer lab with internet facility.

Alva’s Resource Centre for Media and Communication Studies includes vast number of books, research journals, media desk with dailies and periodicals and a collection of about 2500 oldest news papers contributed by Sri Mohana Ganapati Hegade, these aids as a source for academic research.

Academically qualified and professionally experienced dedicated teaching staffs of the department are passionate in providing proper guidance to the students in regard with curriculum, research as well as practical.

Students are assigned with seminar presentations, minor projects and various types of assignments for internal assessment purpose and for intellectual growth of the student. Besides, teaching theoretical concepts, the department lays emphasis on imparting practical knowledge. To provide hands on experience to the students the department brings out daily journal – Alvas Today and a news bulletin – Alvas News Time. Students involve in production of short films, documentaries, news features and segments, interviews, radio features and segments, E-Media Contents and such others. To enhance students’ knowledge and improve industry relations, the department conducts workshops, guest lectures and seminars. The department is well supported by trained and qualified faculty. Last but not the least, the department encourages students to participate in extra-curricular activities both out-side and in-side the college.

Along with regular curriculum, department offers various certificate programmes as an add-on courses. Apart from curricular and co-curricular activities, students get wide exposure with media professionals during Alva’s Nudisiri, Alva’s Virasat, Alva’s Independence Day, Alva’s Varna Virasat and such other regular activities organized by the Alva’s Education Foundation.

Course Offered: M.A. (Journalism and Mass Communication)

Duration of the course: Four Semesters (2 years)

Eligibility:

The candidate who have passed any Bachelor Degree examination of  Mangalore University or any other University in India or abroad considered as equivalent thereto are eligible for the programme provided they have secured a minimum of 45% (40% for SC/ST/Category-I candidates) in aggregate including languages and Group III subjects. Selection of candidates shall be on merit-cum-reservation on the basis of 50:50 weightage for marks in the entrance and qualifying examinations.
